mind vs heart

What Controls You? Your Mind or Your Will?

What helps you get out of your bed in the morning? You were up till four in the morning, working on a very important presentation. But your alarm doesn’t care about that, does it? That wretched thing is blasting at full volume.

Going Against Your Mind

Your mind tells you that it is sleep deprived. A few more minutes or even hours of sleep would be much appreciated. But you also know that you need to get to your office in time to deliver the presentation, else all your work was for naught. It is your will that helps you get out of your bed in the morning, even if your mind is completely against it.

Your mind is calculated and selfish, which looks after itself only. That’s alright because that’s how it stays healthy. But sometimes you have to go against its wishes to accomplish what you want. In these situations, it is your will that helps you not your mind.

Our Mind May Be Our Worst Enemy

We are faced with this dilemma to choose between mind and will, so many times in a day, that we do not stop to think about how important it is to choose the correct path. But when it starts affecting our quality of life we need to take a step back to evaluate our choices. Your mind does have a reason to feel sad or depressed; it has not gone crazy. But these negative emotions can affect your life monumentally. Which is why it is often advised not to make an important decision when you are depressed because that may not be the correct thing for you in the long run, and you end up regretting it later on. What’s the worst part? You start blaming yourself and go down a deep, dark emotional spiral.

Befriending Your Will

What is will? It is the decision to take a proactive step toward what you want. No doubt that it is easier said than done, especially when it goes against your mind. But it is necessary.

I know people who have committed suicide. I know people who have attempted suicide and had a near-death experience, some swear they would never do it again, while others aren’t really sure themselves. And I know people who would never ever take that step no matter how difficult life gets for them. Everyone belongs to one of these categories. It’s our will, or in some cases, the lack thereof, that chooses which category do we belong.

For every person who commits suicide, there are at least three other people alive, struggling through the same situation. The only difference is their will to live and improve their lives which keeps them going even in the face of adverse situations.

Strengthen Your Will

If you find yourself in an emotional situation that you do not want to be, you have the power to change that. Sure, it is hard work, but it would result in you being on the correct path to living a fulfilling life where at all times you are in the exact emotional state that you want.
