Manushi Chillar: Miss World 2017

Key Takeaways: Miss World 2017

Miss World 2017 was a proud moment for Indians and the brilliant answers given by all the participants in the final round emphasized that humanity needs to be preserved to fight all evils of the society.

Yesterday, the world witnessed a momentous occasion when Manushi Chillar from India was crowned Miss World 2017. Winning and bringing back home this prestigious title after 17 years, Manushi Chillar has proven that India’s women are a force to be reckoned with. Through the event, as the world witnessed grace, elegance, and excellence of the Miss World contestants, it was the final question and answer round that emerged to be a comprehensive commentary on world affairs today.

Second runner-up, Stephanie Hill from England, threw light upon the need for an effective global health-care system. Numerous developing and third world countries lack a structure that provides their citizens free/affordable health care, leading to increasing death rates when the countries are struck by epidemics and viral. In such a sorry state of affairs , the lack of good health-care is rejecting the people’s basic and essential right to live.

Miss World 2017 proved that the fashionistas are a combination of beauty and brains.

First runner up, Andrea Meza from Mexico emphasized upon the most important quality that a Miss World must possess- Love. Andrea Meza addressing the need of self-love on such a prominent platform sent out a hard-hitting message for all of us to fight insecurities, depression and self-hate on an everyday basis. In a world where social media reigns, hate for your own self is accessible with a simple click. The actions of a lot of us today are influenced by others;  we are in a constant competition of looking the best, writing the best captions, clicking the best sunset pictures, and getting the most likes and comments on our photos. In this scenario, taking a step back and simply loving yourself is the need of the hour for a happier and more content society; and this is exactly what Andrea Meza’s speech reminded us to do.

Finally, Miss World Manushi Chillar when asked about which profession should be paid highest in the world, gave an absolutely refreshing answer! Mothers, she said, should be the professionals who should be paid highest for their sacrifices, love and protection that they provide for their families throughout their lives. Truly, motherhood is a 24×7 job with no Sundays and no sick leaves, and somehow in this patriarchal society has emerged to be the least appreciated role. A truly feminist statement that is sure to give motherhood the focus and appreciation it deserves.

So, as the Miss World competition becomes historic in its own stead, with these speeches it has definitely etched for itself, a place in 2017’s most indispensable and inspirational moments.
